Off to School
Last Wednesday, for a variety of reasons, we decided to put David in school. Mostly because I haven’t had the energy to do a very good job homeschooling this year, and with a new baby on his way in a few weeks, that’s not likely to improve anytime soon.
He’s adapted very well, looks forward to his 2 PE days each week, aced his first spelling test(“the words were SOOO easy, Mommy!”) LOL, and is excited to have his first hot lunch today. He tells me there ARE healthy things that the “cookers” make there. It’s not all pizza and burgers apparently.Â
We’ve enjoyed seeing his new independence, but it’s been kinda’ sad too. Change is always so hard.

What a great photo!!!
I agree, great photo! It is a big change so I am so glad he is enjoying it.
Okay, Okay..so yes I’m a little bit biased since I did teach first grade in a public school ; ) But I’m not in disagreement with all you moms who homeschool–what works for you works for you! However, good for you for recognizing a need and having the strength to make a change. I think that would be very hard on your mommy-heart. I’ll be praying for you as you make this switch–and for J. We’ll also be praying for new baby on his way soon!

I glad it’s working out for you. Kids learn so much better when they enjoy school!
Wow! I know that must have been a hard decision. What grade did they put him in? I bet he’s having a ball with all the other kids though..and recess! hehe Does he take the bus, or do you drive him? Questions, questions. LOL I bet the bus comes right down your street…lucky!
How are Esther and Luke adjusting to not having him at home? I know Alex had a hard time when both K and E went to school full time this year.
Thanks for all the supportive comments. It’s been hard for me. We see so much value in homeschooling, yet it wasn’t working for us….Now we’re also seeing the value of public schooling. There’s a lot of positives and negatives on both sides and it’s definitely not a black and white issue with us.
Aunt JR – We decided to go with grade 1. A lot of the work is too easy for him so far, but his reading/writing isn’t at a grade 2 level and so I think he would have been frustrated trying to keep up. His age is grade 1 appropriate. He started taking the bus yesterday. It stops at the end of our street, which is pretty easy for me.
Esther and Luke are getting used to him being gone…now they play together more than they used to when David was home.
I couldn’t agree more that there are positives and negatives, we have been very frusterated with schooling for Kayleen. I think David is like Kayleen, she slept through first and second grade. She is really loving 3rd grade. Way more work, more challenging, more independant work. It’s hard to sit through the lower grades and have it too easy for the kids, but it does pick up! Our school district is really upping the math requirements for the 1st graders this year as well..not sure if it’s a state wide thing. And try to not be alarmed with how they teach math, it’s weird, and it’s state wide. I’m getting used to it now that it’s coming full circle for Kayleen.
Wow that was unexpected news. Looks like he’s having fun though and hot lunch and PE are always good fun.
Hope all is well. We need to get together for some music and food again soon.
Here is what you can expect for second grade.
